A load of rubbish from May – 18 empty products and what I thought of them

Well, the products weren’t rubbish – there weren’t any that I really hated this month, but I was left with a lot of empty containers to talk about! Let’s get into it, and don’t forget to let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and what you thought of them!

1. Jasmin hand cream

I only had a mini of this lovely handcream from L’Occitane as it was one of my Latest in Beauty products, but it smells amazing, absorbs quickly, and I would definitely get it again.

2. Autograph primer

This primer from Autograph was a bit unusual to use at first – it’s a thinner consistency to the ones I usually use, and at first I wondered if it would actually do any good. However, it did provide a good base for my foundation, and I think this would be a good one for the summer because it’s not as heavy as some of the other primers in my collection. It’s not something I would usually have bought, but the M&S Advent calendar introduced me to it.

3. TIGI® Bed Head Fully Loaded™ Massive Volume Shampoo And Conditioner Duo

This was actually a free gift that I got in a Feelunique order – don’t forget that you can get £10 off your first Feelunique order if you use my link – details at the bottom of the page. Anyway, I got a sachet with this shampoo and conditioner because I had bought a hair mask from the same brand. It’s supposed to give your hair lift and body, which it did, but I was more distracted by the scent which was like black currant. Fruity hair products are my favourites! If you’re interested in the shampoo, this is where you can find it.

4. Vetiver and grapefruit shower gel

Another free gift – this one came with my Molten Brown haircare order. It was a sample of the new grapefruit and vetiver shower gel. As you may remember from my products for grapefruit lovers post, I love all things grapefruit. This is definitely the traditional grapefruit, so not the sweeter pink grapefruit scent, but I found the vetiver a bit strong, and would have preferred the grapefruit on its own.

5. coconut body butter

I’m not sure how I came to have this coconut body butter from the Body Shop because to be honest, the coconut range is a bit intense for me as someone who doesn’t love coconut. However, this body butter is one of the lighter body butters, so not the solid ones, and I didn’t find the scent was too much. So if you love your coconut more than the fruity things, it’s a good product and keeps your skin feeling soft and moisturised.

6. Elemis superfood wash

This face wash sample from Elemis came in a beauty box. It does smell quite strongly of plants, and it’s packed with natural ingredients such as avocado, broccoli, and pumpkin seed oils, to make your skin feel healthy and look radiant.

7. Cosmeticism Anti-Aging Serum

This is not something I would buy again. I was testing out some serums and noticed this one on offer at the supermarket, which is rarely a good idea. Anyway – I finally finished up the Cosmeticism serum, but I wouldn’t get it again as I think there are much nicer serums on the market, and this one smelled a bit floral, leaving my face a bit sticky. I’m not saying you always have to get the most high-end serums, but I think there are budget-friendly ones that are nicer than this one.

8. Cetterfil cleanser

I hadn’t tried anything from this brand before, so I picked up a Cetterfil set when it came up on Latest in Beauty. The set itself was generous with 3 mini products counting as one item, and this cleanser was one of them. To be honest, I still prefer my vitamin E one from the Body Shop, but if you want a completely scentless one, the Cetterfil one might be better for you.

9. Satsuma shower gel

Yes, this satsuma shower gel is enormous, and if you manage to pick it up from the Body Shop when they are on offer, you can get really good value as well because it lasts ages. Ideal if you love the satsuma range, or you are sharing between a family and want something that’s going to last. I keep swapping between shower gels and am not loyal to one, but this is one of the ones I keep going back to.

10. Madara eye cream

This eye cream came in one of my Lovelula boxes, which specialise in cruelty-free and natural beauty products. I’m not getting the box at the moment, but I always looked forward to getting products from Madara, and this eye cream is no exception. I found that Madara products are nourishing, good quality, and even better that they’re from a natural range.

11. sweet mandarin and grapefruit body wash

I actually got this as part of a Baylis and Harding set, but here is the link to the body wash on its own. We’ve bought both the hand wash and the body wash in this scent – and of course it’s got grapefruit in it, so I’m going to be a fan!

12. spackle primer

I know some people rave about this spackle primer from Laura Geller but it just didn’t work for me. It hated some of my skincare products, even when I left it a while, and it just felt sticky and not like a good base onto which I could put the rest of my make-up. I don’t know what type of skin it suits best, but it didn’t seem to like mine. I don’t think it’s a bad product as such, but not one for me.

13. peppermint and geranium shower gel

I got this peppermint and geranium shower gel in a beauty box. In terms of doing what shower gels do, it was fine, but I don’t want to smell like a peppermint or a geranium plant, so it lost points with me on account of the scent. It’s a shame because I do like the Greenfrog products, just not some of the scents that they do.

14. Body shop toner

An old favourite – the Body Shop toner is back in the empties! I do have other toners such as exfoliating ones, but if you want a good, gentle toner, you can’t go wrong with this one.

15. Fuji green tea shower gel

I just had a mini of this because I wanted to try something from the Fuji green tea range. I prefer the fruity things, but as a shower gel it’s fine, and I think people who like things that are a bit more subtle would enjoy this more than some of the other lines.

16. Kiehl’s face wash

This face wash was sent to my Mum with an order and she passed it on to me for blog testing! I only really use products like this in the shower. I think out of the products I’ve tried, the toner is still my favourite, but this is a gentle facial wash and my face didn’t feel dried out as it has on occasions with more harsh facial washes.

17. Body Shop gentle eye make-up remover

I’ve been through several of these now. I have tried others, but I keep coming back to this make-up remover from the Body Shop because it is kind to eyes and doesn’t make me cry!

18. micellar water

This is the Caudalie micellar water that I got in the April Latest in Beauty box. At the time of writing, it’s out of stock, but I’ll link to it anyway. It’s not the cheapest micellar water around, but I think it’s kinder to the skin than some of the really cheap ones, so I don’t mind investing a bit more in something that will shift the make-up whilst at the same time being a bit kinder to the skin.

Blog reader gift – trying out Lush products

So a couple of weeks ago something happened that has never happened before on Unseen Beauty. I received a parcel from one of my readers! It was such a lovely and kind thing to do. It’s one thing when a brand is kind enough to send you something to try out, but when it’s someone who does it because they read your blog and want to do something nice for you, that’s something else and I was really touched.

So Becky has been supporting Unseen Beauty for ages now by commenting or sharing my posts. She asked me on Facebook whether I had tried any products from Lush, and I said that I hadn’t. She then asked for my address because she wanted to send me something.

When the box arrived, there were actually four things inside! I was really surprised and the box smelled amazing. Becky had clearly been paying attention to my posts as well because she chose things that include my favourite fruity scents – mango and grapefruit!

To be honest, I hadn’t really tried that much from Lush before. It’s partly because I didn’t realise the full range of products that they do, partly because I thought everything would leave the bath really messy, and partly because some bath products I’ve used in the past haven’t dissolved fully and there were gritty bits all over the bottom of the bath, which were a problem for me. More about sensory sensitivity in another post.

So what was in the box from Becky?

Bright side bubble bar

I didn’t know that bubble bars were even a thing. They are flat, like a bar of soap, and you can snap them in half because when dissolved, even half of one will give you a lot of bubbles.

The bright side bubble bar smells amazingly citrusy and contains Bergamotte mandarin and tangerine. You get a thick layer of bubbles on top of the water and they are proper bubbles, not ones that dissolve into nothing if you touch them. It’s like a carpet of bubbles floating on your water and it makes the room smell wonderful! I was definitely a fan of this!

Happy hippy shower gel – grapefruit

I think Becky chose this grapefruit shower gel because she knows I’m a fan of grapefruit! This is the really zingy kind of grapefruit, not the sweeter scent that you sometimes get when it’s pink grapefruit or mixed with other things. The shower gel was moisturising, and the scent stayed around on my skin throughout the rest of the day. I would definitely get this again!

The comforter bubble bar

This is another bubble bar, like the first one, but the Comforter bubble bar contains blackcurrant and bergamotte. I liked this bar too, although not quite as much as the orange one because I liked the citrus scent more. There weren’t quite as many bubbles either, but there were still more than you get with a lot of bubble baths that are more expensive than the bar.

You’ve been mangoed – bath oil

This cute little mango bath oil dissolves away into your bath water. I love the design because it looks like a mini mango, and the mango scent is also one of my favourites. When you get out of the bath, your skin is really soft, and although I always use moisturisers afterwards, this is a good option for people who forget or who don’t like body lotion. The bath water did apparently look a bit cloudy afterwards and there was an oily mark round the bath. Obviously I clean the bath anyway, but this took a bit more to remove, and I would advise anyone using these to watch out because they can make the bath a bit slippery as well. I’d say I’m more a fan of the bars, but I enjoyed testing this bath oil out.

Final thoughts

So, overall I was really glad to get the chance to try out these products because I learned a bit more about the range of things on offer at Lush, I got some grapefruity and mango goodness, and I discovered bubble bars. It was only really the bath oil that made a bit of a mess. In terms of the debris, I put my bars, bath salts, or bath bombs in a small material bag that floats and keeps all the bits inside. The oils come out through the holes, and anything else stays inside. Of course most people don’t do this, but my doing it means I can enjoy these products too – and that has to be a good thing!

Thanks again to Becky for her generous gift. Since I received it, I have made a trip to lush and got a couple more bars and bath bombs – more reviews to come soon!

Feel Unique haul – part 1

I’d heard about Feel Unique’s pick n’ mix service, which means you get to choose a number of samples and only pay the packaging, but I only really got interested in Feel Unique when I learned that it was much more than the sample service. I saw a Youtube on Willow Biggs’ channel about the Feel Unique sale, so I decided to check it out!

I was interested because I’d noticed that some of the things that I wanted to buy were cheaper than on Amazon, and I also couldn’t find some products that I wanted in my local Boots, so I was pleased when they showed up on Feel Unique.

My first order came to just under £30. I put the order in last Wednesday and my box arrived yesterday – well-packed so that nothing got damaged on the journey. I also got an email for tracking my parcel, but the parcel turned up earlier than it was scheduled to, so that was great.

I’m going to show you half of the items now and half at the end of the week.

Feel Unique has a special promotion for inviting new people to join. You can get £10 off your first order by going onto the site using my affiliate link. This offer is open to new customers only, and the minimum spend is £30. So basically you can get £30 of products for £20. This is an affiliate link, so I also get a reward – in this case it’s £10 worth of products, which I will use to buy new things to test out on Unseen Beauty. However I only promote things that I enjoy, and I was very happy with the service I received from Feel Unique.

Unfortunately I think the summer sale is now over, but even without the sale, there are bargains to be found, and you can also sign up for the newsletter that lets you know what’s coming up.

Products from Zoella Beauty

The first three things that I chose were from the Zoella Beauty brand. I was intrigued about Youtubers having their own merchandise, and I’d recently seen a review of a bunch of Zoella’s products.

I didn’t get so many from this line because I’m not really a bath bomb kind of girl, but I did find three things to try.

When asked in a recent interview which of her products she would recommend for someone who hadn’t tried any, she said it would have to be the Scooper Duper bubble bath. It’s a big pot with 400ml of bubble bath in it. The idea is that you scoop a load out with your hand and hold it under the running water for extra bubbles! It’s described as floral, but it’s not an in-your-face kind of floral that would turn me off. It contains vitamin E, aloe and shea butter to soothe and soften the skin.

I also picked up the wonderous whip body cream, which contains some of the same ingredients as the bubble bath. It’s a light-textured lotion, which I think is nice for the summer, when you particularly want something that will absorb quickly. The wonderous whip comes in a tub similar to the bubble bath, but smaller because it’s 200ml. I’ve only had thick body butters in a tub like this before, but it goes on nicely and it’s a good way to make sure you get all of it – not like some of the bottles that you have to squish and squish till you get every last drop out!

The last thing I picked up was the Zoella Wonder Hand moisturising hand cream. It’s described as having a calming feminine fragrance. I’m not sure how I’d describe the fragrance – I guess it’s floral but I tend to go for more heavily-scented hand creams than this one. The handcream comes in a 90g tube and it is a non-greasy formula that left my hands feeling soft.

Overall I was pleased with these products. I will use all of them up and I would buy the first two again.

Have you tried any of Zoella’s products? Let me know in the comments. Also, have you ever shopped at Feel Unique?

My next post will be about the other things that I got in my Feel Unique haul!
